For example, at one point, Socrates points to Dan’s forehead and says, “The trash is up here.” Taken out of context, this statement can be applied in good ways. Some of the movie’s New Age teachings are not necessarily offensive in and of themselves. Thus, the movie is not as dramatically compelling as it should be. PEACEFUL WARRIOR is able to hold the viewer’s interest, but the protagonist is a distasteful playboy whose main battles are against himself. When Dan suffers a terrible motorcycle accident, however, he returns to Socrates and his New Age training in order to heal his shattered body and compete for a chance at the Olympics. Dan jokingly calls the man “Socrates,” but eventually becomes perturbed by the man’s mystical advice. He stops at a gas station, where he encounters a mysterious gray-haired attendant who has on the same pair of shoes that the janitor in Dan’s dream wears.ĭan becomes intrigued by the attendant, who spouts New Age aphorisms like “wisdom is in doing” and who seems to be able to slow down time and suddenly materialize atop the gas station’s roof. Upset, Dan leaves the girl lying in bed next to him to go jogging. ![]() In the dream, a janitor with two mismatched shoes sweeps up the pieces of Dan’s leg. Young college gymnast Dan Millman dreams that he shatters his leg, which breaks into a thousand plastic jigsaw pieces. PEACEFUL WARRIOR is a low-budget New Age sports drama that has some moral problems to go along with its philosophical oddities.īased on a best-selling book, the movie opens with a dream sequence. PEACEFUL WARRIOR also contains foul language and sexual content. While the story is fun and engaging, the few nuggets of New Age spiritual wisdom are awkwardly shoehorned in and disrupt the flow of the story. His next, abrupt journey takes him deep into China, to a secluded and secretive farm and martial arts school where a planned one-week stay morphs into several months of learning, working, and crafting his accumulated wisdom into brief, paradoxical statements. With the help of a blind man who pops up everywhere, he manages to locate its mountainous hiding place and discovers he must fill in its blank pages. In the late 1970s, Dan, backed by a grant from Oberlin College to traverse the world researching mind-body disciplines, finds himself drawn to the American Southwest in search of a journal his mentor, a mystical gas station attendant he calls Socrates, may or may not have lost years before. Millman completes his Peaceful Warrior Saga in this autobiographical novel combining intercontinental travel, colorful guides, stunning coincidences, and deep-sounding snippets. ![]()
